About the Department

Vigilant Hose Company is located in Frederick County, Maryland.

To operate a public sector emergency services agency costs a great deal of money. Contrary to a widely held belief, the volunteer fire service is not free. Many who visit the area say again and again that the greater Emmitsburg region is extremely fortunate to have the talent, spirit of volunteerism and dedication to community service ingrained throughout our all-volunteer fire department. Our service provides fire, rescue and emergency services to our community. Our firefighters, EMT’s, Rescue Techs and Auxiliary all work together to make our department shine. We are located just south of the Mason-Dixon line separating Maryland from Pennsylvania.

From humble beginnings, the Vigilant Hose Company has come a long way. Committed workers, great leaders and teamwork have all been the mainstay of their success over the years. It’s apparent that many different kinds of support, not only financial, have been provided to the Vigilant Hose Company members and the intent are to continue doing so. There is a superb working relationship between fire department and auxiliary members. All Auxiliary members work in harmony to achieve the same mission- provide financial support to the fire department so they can provide the best Fire and EMS protection to the citizens of the Emmitsburg community and other surrounding communities.

Why Vigilant Hose Company?

Be it as a volunteer firefighter, rescue specialist, emergency medical technician, fire-police member, auxiliary member, or youth programs member, few opportunities in life can match the sense of pride that comes from knowing you’re making a difference in the lives of others — something we experience every day!

We, at the Vigilant Hose Company of Emmitsburg (VHC), always seek people with a strong desire to help others to join with us — people with pride and dedication to making the community safer and better. Because our work is so important, we make sure all our firefighters and emergency response personnel are properly trained and equipped. But, as anyone can imagine, this is an unending task that requires time and costs money.

We offer a wide range of jobs, each with a high level of job-satisfaction. All you need to do is to offer your time. The “can-do” members of the VHC make all feel welcomed, wanted, AND appreciated! If you really want to do something meaningful for your family, friends and neighbors and are willing to take on challenging work, please either call, visit, or check us out on the web. Volunteer with the Vigilant Hose Company: The Experience of a Lifetime!
