About the Department

The St. Michael’s Fire Department, Station 40, is the volunteer fire company responsible for the safety of St. Michael’s and surrounding communities. The department covers Arcadia Shores to Wittman, covering 120 square miles of land area and 130 miles of shoreline, and protecting a yearly population of around 8,500. During the Tourist Session, the daily tourist and summer resident population make that total approximately 13,500, and the total rises to over 22,000 during special events. Station 40 responds to over 1,000 Ambulance, Rescue and Fire calls each year.

SMFD’s equipment includes to Fire Engines, a Ladder Truck, a 2,500 Gal. Pumper Tanker, two Advanced Life Support Ambulances, a Brush Truck, a Command Vehicle, a Fire/Rescue Boat.

When called, Station 40 can bring up to 5,500 gals. of water, thousands of feet of hose, and an assortment of tools to handle almost any emergency; including motor vehicle collisions, search and rescue missions, fire suppression and containment, and a multitude of other public safety issues.

The Fire Department’s primary fundraising methods are the annual Fund Drive and Firemen’s Auction. The Fund Drive operates throughout the year, and The Firemen’s Auction is typically held in the Fall, where residents and visitors come together and help raise money to keep the SMFD fully funded. Throughout the year, Pit Beef and Chicken BBQ Saturday’s and Flea Markets are held at Station 40, where families are encouraged to come and meet the firefighter’s who serve the community.

Many things about the fire service have changed throughout the years, but Station 40 is still operated 100% by VOLUNTEERS who receive $0.00 in pay for protecting the community. SMFD is primarily funded by donations from those who appreciate their service, and without those donates, the department would cease to exist.
