The College Park Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1925 by members of the College Park community looking to organize a department to provide reliable fire protection to the residential neighborhoods of the city as well as the University of Maryland. Since our inception and through the evolution of our organization, it has been our vision to constantly strive to be a leading Fire/EMS Department who is fully mission capable and determined to serve all those within our community. From 21 calls for service in our first year of operation to nearly 5,000 calls for service in 2015, the CPVFD continues to evolve and thrive within our community as we grow into the future. The College Park Volunteer Fire Department has something to offer for everyone, from local community members looking to give back to the community they call home, to out of state students starting their college career in the College Park area.

At the core of our Department is the student live-in program. The CPVFD is home to the one and only “Sackroom”, “The ultimate college based firefighting experience”. Since the 1940’s, student volunteers have called the CPVFD home, starting with a modest two beds in the engine room to the establishment of the fire service dormitory (known as the Sackroom) in 1956. Today, the “Sackroom” boasts 12, semi-private suite style dorm rooms where we can house up to 24 student live-ins.

The College Park VFD provides the ideal environment for student live-in members. Located on the University of Maryland campus, no other department offers a living environment like that of the College Park VFD. Members get to live in a true college town in semi-private, dorm style rooms steps from class, all while running thousands of calls per year creating an environment for formal learning and street experience like no other!
