About the Department

The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department was organized on May 12, 1947 at a meeting held in the local Grange Hall on Route 198 with approximately 45 men in attendance. The Department was formed because the closest firehouse that was in Hillandale was considered too far away. During this first meeting, eighteen members pledged $1,825 to get the Department started.
Through the dedication of countless members over the years, we have grown to be one of the most active volunteer corporations in Montgomery County, Maryland—responding to over 5,000 emergency calls per year.

We are a non-profit organization operating in a combination fire rescue system, with volunteers working with Montgomery County firefighters and EMT/Paramedic’s to staff a fleet of five front line pieces of apparatus and one reserve piece, including:

  • 2004 Pierce Rescue Squad
  • 2008 Pierce Pumper
  • 2016 Pierce Aerial Ladder Truck
  • 2007 Freightliner Ambulance
  • 2006 Ford Brush Truck

Our over 100 active volunteer members are local citizens from all walks of life, ranging in age from 16 to 65, that enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of helping others and serving their community.

The Burtonsville VFD is always searching for energetic and committed volunteers to serve in many capacities, including operationally as firefighters and EMT’s, and administratively as Associate and Auxiliary members. We offer free training and many other benefits to all volunteers!

Additional Benefits:

All training and gear is provided free of charge.  All members can partake in a group dinner most evenings “on the house” when they serve their duty nights!  We have private and semi-private dorms for live-in members.
